George Fox Chapel

George Fox Chapel

Chapel is based on biblical walled/courtyard tabernacle: the chapel has forecourt, side, and ante-court. The overall complex is sited at the end of the campus footbridge, and creates Chapel Square with raised plaza and steps on axis with footbridge. Floor plan organization places service spaces alongside the sanctuary, creating ample space for bathrooms, wedding, library(adjacent to enclosed garden).

This sided layout responds to the athletic fields north as a more closed reflection, with the roof reaching down as the courtyard wall reaches up, and to the pedestrian node south as a more open reflection, with a lowered courtyard wall with entrances from Chapel Square, and rhythm of sanctuary windows alongside raised plaza with seating. Motifs/symbols are found throughout, including Dove/Book wings/pages, sanctuary trusses as Chi Ro, and views/sequences invoking Eden Garden, Calgary(trees in courtyard opposite prayer bench), eye of the needle. This format, placement, motifs, places are expected to be experienced at a silent, quiet, glimmer of spirit and word, giving pause and respite to both believer and nonbeliever alike.
